Best and Worst Roulette Bets

The best roulette choice is determined first by the wheel and its rules, not by a lucky number or betting pattern. Learn which bets cost less, which one costs more, and how to choose the level of risk you actually want.

The American five number basket covers zero, double zero, one, two, and three with a higher house edge than most bets.
The five number basket has a higher house edge than most American roulette bets.
The most important distinction

On a standard American wheel, almost every normal wager has the same 5.26% house edge.

Inside bets are not worse simply because they win less often. Their larger payouts balance their lower hit rates. The major exception is the five-number basket covering 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3, which carries a 7.89% house edge.

Inside and outside bets serve different goals

The regular wagers below all have a 5.26% house edge on an American wheel. What changes is volatility: how frequently the bet wins and how large the payout is when it does.

Expected loss

Measure total action, not only the opening bankroll

Expected loss equals total amount wagered multiplied by the house edge. If you make twenty $5 wagers, your total action is $100. At a 5.26% edge, the theoretical loss is about $5.26, even if your original bankroll was only $25 and the same chips were repeatedly wagered.

A $100 total wager on the five-number basket has a theoretical loss of about $7.89. The same action on a European single-zero wheel has a theoretical loss of about $2.70. Actual short sessions can finish far above or below those figures, but the difference becomes increasingly meaningful over repeated play.

Practical bankroll choice

Use smaller flat wagers if you want more spins from the same bankroll. Choose outside bets for more frequent, smaller results or inside bets for less frequent, larger swings. Neither choice changes the standard American house edge.

Avoid this wager

Why the five-number basket is the worst American bet

The basket covers five numbers and typically pays 6 to 1. A fair payout would need to be higher, so the casino advantage rises to approximately 7.89%. If you want action around the green pockets, separate straight-up or split wagers retain the standard 5.26% American edge, although they remain high-volatility bets.

Common myths

What does not make a roulette bet better

Outside bets are not mathematically cheaper

On a standard American wheel, red, black, odd, even, high, low, dozens, columns, and normal inside bets all carry the same 5.26% house edge. Outside bets simply win more often and pay less.

A hot number is not more likely to repeat

Each spin is independent. A recent streak does not change the number of pockets or the probability attached to the next wager.

Covering more numbers does not remove the edge

More coverage creates more frequent wins, but the lower payout preserves the casino advantage. Risk changes; expected value does not.

Betting systems change wager size, not probability

Martingale and other progressions can create many small wins followed by a large loss. They cannot change the house edge, table limit, or bankroll requirement.

A sensible decision order

How to choose a roulette bet

  1. 1. Choose the better wheel. Prefer European single-zero roulette, especially with La Partage, when available.
  2. 2. Avoid the five-number basket. It carries a higher edge without offering a compensating benefit.
  3. 3. Choose your preferred volatility. Outside bets produce more frequent smaller wins; inside bets produce less frequent larger wins.
  4. 4. Keep wager size consistent and affordable. Smaller flat bets generally extend play and avoid the rapid escalation created by progression systems.
